Mental Health in Seoul

The Ministry of Health and Welfare recently released statistics on how many people are living with mental illness in South Korea. This statistical data, which covers the years 2010-2015, was generated from the Community Mental Health Survey. The survey included different communities across Seoul, which were representative of the country’s population. The report found that 49% of all adults have experienced some form of mental illness in their lifetime, ranging from mild to severe. 18% had experienced major depressive disorder at some point in their life and 5% had experienced schizophrenia.

The statistics revealed by this study reflect a shift in attitude regarding mental illness. In the past, South Koreans did not openly discuss mental health issues, and problems were often dealt with inside the family unit. However, in recent years there has been an increase in public awareness about this issue. The survey also found that people under 30 tended to seek help for their mental health conditions, and men and women were equally likely to receive treatment if they experienced a disorder.

A major shift in thought has occurred in South Korea when it comes to how serious of an issue mental illness actually is. For many years, mental health disorders were not discussed in public or within the family unit. There was even a stigma attached to the thought of being diagnosed with depression or schizophrenia. Now that this data has been made public knowledge, people are seeking treatment for their conditions at earlier stages before they get more severe.
